Mousetail - Myosurus Minimus

This member of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) is very distinctive. The plant consists of a rosette of very narrow, linear, dark green leaves up to 85mm long. There are from one to many leafless flowering stems growing from the centre of the rosette. These flowering stems grow to 15cm in height, rarely taller, and are sometimes as short as 2 cm. The flowers are initially inconspicuous with small, green-yellow petals which soon fall. The seed-bearing receptacle elongates after flowering to form a long, narrowly conical and conspicuous 'mouse's tail'.
